A 2012 presidential campaign has been named as a defendant in a lawsuit against State Treasurer Dan Rutherford.Former treasurer’s office employee Ed Michalowski is suing the Mitt Romney campaign along with Rutherford, claiming he was forced by Rutherford to devote time and his own money to the campaign.
One of Michalowski’s attorneys, Dana Kurtz, says the suit does not claim that Romney’s national campaign was involved. “I don’t know if they knew about it,” Kurtz said. “The point is that Rutherford was in charge of the campaign…for the state of Illinois, and for raising money.”

Kurtz compared Rutherford to “a mob boss” that threatened to fire employees who didn’t do political work. Another attorney for Michalowski, Christine Svenson, says the claims of sexual harassment against Rutherford that were part of her client’s original lawsuit remain in the new complaint.
“They are still viable,” Svenson said. “Everything that was in before, and now we’ve added three more counts.”
Rutherford’s attorneys now have fourteen days to respond. A Rutherford lawyer declined to comment.
