Just about a month after the Mississippi River was so low that barge traffic was restricted, rains have brought it and other Midwestern rivers nearly to flood stage.  The Mississippi is nearing the top of its banks in several spots from St. Louis to Cairo.  Weekend rains and snow melt have pushed the Ohio River to a foot above flood level at Cairo, though the town has a flood wall that would protect residents even if the Ohio rose another twenty feet.

The National Weather Service said several rivers were at or near flood stage in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Missouri.
