A longtime bowling hot spot in the Riverbend is no more, after officially closing this week. Riverboat Lanes in Godfrey is for sale, with the owners consolidating operations to Bowl Haven Lanes inAltonand Airport Plaza Bowl in Bethalto. While the business was booming for many years, in more recent times, participation in the sport has decreased and the owners said is was time to close.
All three locations are owned by Jim Saffo, who said since it was the smallest of the three; it was time to cut expenses. Saffo says there are still plenty of bowlers in the area, but not enough to maintain Godfrey, so he decided to close it. Most of the Riverboat bowlers will relocate to Bowl Haven, and former manager Tom White has moved out to oversee Airport Plaza Bowl. Riverboat had its start as ACME Bowl on Broadway inAlton, and then moved toGodfrey Road.
