The Independence Day holiday is upon us, and two large River Bend fireworks displays will go on as planned. In Alton, the annual fireworks will be held tonight on the riverfront, with Tom Petty and Johnny Cash tribute band Petty Cash Junction performing at the Amphitheater before the fireworks. In Godfrey, it is the annual Family Fun Fest, which will be held Wednesday night, July 4, from 5-9pm.
Many municipalities have cancelled their fireworks displays over fire concerns prompted by drought conditions. Godfrey Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Ron Brooks says Alton shoots theirs over the river, and in Godfrey, they shoot theirs over the lake.
Prior to the fireworks at about 9:15pm in Godfrey tomorrow night, there will be a climbing wall, zip line, arts & crafts, fire truck display, Mike the Balloon Guy, BeBe the Face Painting Clown, baseball throw, dunking booth, inflatables and vendors starting at 5pm. The Alton display will be shot off this evening (July 3) starting around 9:15. The Clark Bridge will be closed during the display.
