Illinois lawmakers are putting tighter restrictions in place when it comes to synthetic drugs, like bath salts and K2. The drugs are already banned in Illinois but Senator Jerry Costello II, of Smithton says manufacturers are finding ways to skirt the laws and make big money.
State officials claim the manufacturers are targeting young people with their catchy names and packaging. Thousands of Illinois youth have come up sick after using the drugs. Some have even died, including one alleged death from an overdose in Alton. The new proposal makes it illegal to sell any mixture of synthetic drugs. Those caught doing so will face stiffer penalties. The bill is headed to Governor Quinn.
