The continued delay on Illinois 255 to Humbert Road in Godfrey doesn't mean motorists haven't been able to try out the new pavement. Although the highway is still closed, cyclists and pedestrians have all been seen sneaking onto the roadway. Since the road has not been opened, they are considered trespassers, and IDOT and the Madison County Sheriff's Department is aware of the situation, according to IDOT Field Engineer Joe Gasaway.
The so-called "Alton Bypass" has been in the planning stages for about 4 decades, but recently suffered a set back when the fill dirt under part of the new section began to sink, causing the pavement to do the same. Gasaway says it looks like the section from Seminary to Humbert will now open about the same time as the final leg to Godfrey Road later this year
