The rains of last month that caused the regional flooding also caused damage to some city streets in Alton.  Repairs have begun to some of the smaller issues, but the washout along Summit Street will likely involve a significant amount of time and money, according to the city's Public Works director.

An engineer will have to determine how to best stabilize the ground and then rebuild the street.  Alton Public Works Director Bob Barnhart says it is more costly in general to repair brick streets.

He says when repairing brick streets, you will often find instead of a concrete surface the bricks were laid down on top of cinders and nothing else.  That, according to Barnhart, creates an extra step when re-installing the bricks.
