If you rent a house or an apartment and your landlord is in foreclosure, you now have some extra protections. Senate Bill 56 allows renters to stay in their homes until the end of their lease, or be given a minimum of 90 days' notice before facing eviction. The law was also supported by the Illinois Housing Development Authority, and State Representative Dan Beiser (D-Alton).
Approximately 40 percent of families affected by foreclosure are renters, who may have no idea that their landlord wasn't paying the mortgage. The law goes into effect in a little more than a month. Beiser has supported legislation recently that increases both the General Homestead Exemption and the Senior Citizen Homestead Exemption to provide tax relief.
