A lawsuit has been filed in Madison County Court by the group that operates the Wood River Refinery claiming local taxing districts inflated their tax levies and violated state law in the process. WRB Refining alleges in the suit that the Village of Roxana, the Roxana School District, Roxana Library District and the Roxana Park District all took advantage of higher property assessments at the refinery.
The suit asks a judge to review the recent tax levies imposed by the districts, and believes the court will find that the districts "ballooned" their 2011 tax levies beyond what is allowed by law. A $2-billion expansion of the refinery over the last several years has allowed local taxing bodies to bring in more money, and use that money for improvements or to pay off debts. WRB Refining believes the court will find that the rates being levied are not fair to all taxpayers, and is seeking a refund in what it paid to the surrounding districts.
