The Wood River Refinery in Roxana is being sued by the Attorney General Lisa Madigan. The lawsuit names former owner Shell Oil, the plant's current owner, WRB Refining LP, and current operator ConocoPhillips as the defendants. Madigan claims the owners have allowed oil, gas and other toxic materials to enter the groundwater and spread beyond property lines.
The suit seeks reimbursement for clean-up, as well as civil penalties and violations. Several personal injury suits have already been filed by nearby residents in Wood River and Roxana, with some claiming the alleged contamination has caused cancer in some people. A class action suit has been filed that is demanding clean up of any contaminated properties. Officials with ConocoPhillips say they have been cooperating with authorities at the local, state and federal level to be responsible operators of the facility and believe many of the problems connected with the lawsuits go back to previous owners.
