Illinois' famous flying fish are the focus of the “Original Redneck Fishing Tournament” in the Mason County community of Bath. Organizer Betty DeFord says the event, which includes costumes and live entertainment, also is a fund-raiser. “I have a husband that is a veteran,” she said. “He was (in Danville) for treatment for eight weeks this year, and I just could not believe how many homeless veterans that we have, and if you're homeless, you don't qualify for anything.”

The Asian carp, seen as a menace because they beat out other fish for food, jump out of the water, which is funny until someone gets hurt. “We've had people in this tournament end up with broken noses,” she says.
