The local Salvation Army's Tree of Lights campaign kicks off tonight, and the organization is still looking for more volunteers to ring bells this holiday season. They are hoping to have an all-volunteer team of bell ringers this year, as paying some of their bell ringers has cost them upwards of $20,000 in the past. The campaign kicks off with the 19th annual lighting of the tree at Lincoln-Douglas Square at 6pm.
Alton Salvation Army Lieutenant Teri Ellison says you can win prizes by volunteering.
Ellison says that you can volunteer by calling their office at 465-7764 or you can sing up online by clicking on the link below. Tonight's tree lighting includes a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus starting at 6pm, free cookies and hot chocolate from the Salvation Army. The community Christmas Tree will be turned on at around 6:45pm. The Riverbender.com Community Center will hold a free open house from 7-9pm.
