Residents are continually urged to give the gift of life by giving blood, but the local American Red Cross chapter reminds there are other aspects to the agency.  Al Bertram, Disaster Program Specialist with the Southwestern Illinois Chapter of the American Red Cross, says fire relief is one of their most requested services. 

Bertram says surprisingly, there have not been a large number of fires given the recent cold snap, but cautions that could change.

He says if you are going to use a space heater, make sure they are kept away from anything flammable, and don’t cover them with rugs or blankets.  Also, if you use an extension cord, make sure you use one that is designed to accept the load it is being asked to carry.
