There are more new Automatic External Defibrillator's being placed around the region, and the head of the local American Red Cross chapter thinks more people should learn how to operate one. The technology is fairly new, but is saving countless lives according to many in the first responder professions. The AED can be used to shock a heart that has stopped beating back into action.
Robin Summers, Executive Director of the Southwestern Illinois Chapter of the American Red Cross, says there was an incident at SIUE in which a seemingly healthy student slumped over in a classroom, and someone who knew how to use the AED jumped into action.
The general public can get trained on this equipment during one of the First Aid / CPR / AED courses. Call 465-7704 for information.
