Rising river levels and a stronger than usual current has delayed the recovery of a sunken towboat on the Mississippi River. The Roxana-based vessel sank last Tuesday near the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge for an unknown reason with 10,000 gallons of diesel fuel aboard according to the Coast Guard. That fuel is cause for concern and the Coast Guard has placed a pollution control team on standby to help control any spill or seepage that may occur.

The river is predicted to crest Wednesday and officials say recovery efforts may be put on hold for several weeks while they wait for water levels and the current to subside enough to allow for the safe recovery of the vessel.
