Enrollment at the University of Illinois in Urbana has never been higher. It’s 43,398, the university says, which is a record. The freshman class of 7,330 is the second largest ever (No. 1 was in the fall if 2005). Spokesman Robin Kaler says the campus is busy, but it’s not bursting at the seams. There is room for everyone in classes and dormitories.

“In our residence halls for example, in years when we have fewer students, there are certain rooms that are converted into lounges, and after a couple of years students start saying oh, that’s a lounge, and then when you have a year with more students, it’s converted back to an actual room,” she said. Kaler says the university had a record number of undergraduate applicants, 33,178, and of those who were accepted, a higher-than-usual percentage chose to enroll. Seventy-three percent of the students are from Illinois; others are from all 50 states and 100 countries.
