Illinois Republican governor candidate Bruce Rauner is being accused of trying to skip out on paying taxes by hiding his riches off-shore. Published reports in the Chicago Sun Times indicate Rauner channeled some of his money through the Cayman Islands. The money is connected to three of Rauner's holdings in the private equity firm that he helped start.
Rauner says the money had nothing to do with his personal tax rate and at this point, he hasn't been charged with any wrongdoing. According to their 2012 federal tax returns, Rauner and his wife earned $53 million. The report comes as Rauner leads Governor Pat Quinn in the most polls in the race for the state’s top office. Illinois Democrats have questioned why Rauner has not yet released his tax returns for 2013, an issue Rauner has said he would address in October.
