State environmental officials are hailing the discovery of a rare mussel in Illinois River.  Officials from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources say they were able to make a rare survey of mollusk communities near Marseilles after the Illinois River became flooded during the spring.

Among the nearly 15-thousand mollusks scientists gathered they found a rare "scaleshell" mussel from what's believed to be the only known remaining population of that species.
