The Illinois State Police will spend this week raising awareness about safety for motorists and pedestrians around railroad tracks as part of Illinois Rail Safety week. In 2013, Illinois ranked third in the nation for grade crossing fatalities and third for trespass fatalities. As a result, District 11 Commander Joe Kollins has announced additional patrols in areas with railroad crossings. He also recommends that you look and listen prior to crossing any tracks.
Operation Lifesaver also offers several tips for remaining safe when crossing railroad tracks. They include watching for crossbuck signs, lights, and gates, listening for warning bells or whistles, crossing the tracks at a lower gear and never changing gears while crossing tracks.
