Work on area railroad crossings is scheduled to wrap up later this week, with the crossing at Bethany Lane the only one still barricaded. Work on the other crossings in Godfrey wrapped up early last week, relieving congestion on alternate routes that is normally not seen in the growing village.
The work is part of the Illinois Department of Transportation High Speed Rail upgrade. Union Pacific Railroad spokesman Mark Davis says heading north, there may be similar work going through Brighton, Shipman and Carlinville.
Concrete ties are being replaced along the route, as testing in extreme lab conditions showed some flaking on the concrete. He stresses there were no actual failures on existing rail lines.
In unrelated work, Union Pacific is repairing crossings in East Alton. The crossing at Niagara, near McDonald's, is closed for repair and in the coming weeks, the crossing on Route 3 will also be shut down for repair.
