It’s the silent killer! A conference of people who deal, in one way or another, with radon is going on in Springfield this week. IEMA assistant director Joe Klinger is hosting the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors national training conference. Klinger says the gathering includes radon mitigators and the American Lung Association.

“It’s awareness. Radon is a naturally occurring substance from the decay of uranium in the soil,” says Klinger. “It just depends on the construction materials in the house, and the geologic formations as to how much radon will be in your house.” Radon is said to be the second-leading cause of lung cancer, behind only smoking. The bare minimum, Klinger says, is to get a radon detector and follow its instructions.
