A heated exchange in the state Senate over automatic voter registration led to one senator accusing another of racism.

Southern Illinois State Sen. Kyle McCarter questioned whether Sen. Andy Manar’s automatic voter registration bill would safeguard against illegal immigrants voting. Chicago Democrat Martin Sandoval took exception.

“The rhetoric being used by some of the members of that side of the aisle is immoral, unconscionable and disrespectful, racist and just all-out unacceptable and not reflective of the people of Illinois,” Sandoval said toward McCarter.

After a shouting match on the Senate floor between the two, McCarter was given a chance to respond. “I’m going to continue to vote the way I think it should be in this state and what’s best for this state despite what names are called in this chamber.”

The bill passed and now heads to the House for consideration.
