Gov. Pat Quinn got two looks at Southern Illinois Monday, both to celebrate transportation projects. At East St. Louis, Quinn observed the beginning of the final stage of construction for the new Stan Musial Veterans Bridge, which, starting sometime next year, will carry Interstate 70 over the Mississippi River and will relieve congestion on the Poplar Street Bridge, which now carries Interstates 55, 64, and 70.

The governor said he has not forgotten about the old bridge, or about other routes in the area.“We're investing, our state, another $25 million, so that Route 3 is part of that mission,” Quinn said. After that, it was on to Marion, to break ground on construction of a third lane of Interstate 57, a $10.6 million project which will stretch to Johnston City.
