Governor Pat Quinn has declared the southern third of Illinois a state disaster area after an EF4 tornado tore through, killing six people.
Quinn toured Harrisburg, which was the most heavily damaged area. All six people who died were from Harrisburg. Quinn says he’s praying for their immortal souls, and implored all Illinois residents to do what they can to help.
“It’s very very important to understand that anytime this bad thing happens from nature, that we don’t give up, that we help those who have been devastated by this natural disaster, that we come together and rebuild,” he says.
Quinn’s disaster declaration ensures state resources will be available to assist in cleanup and recovery. The Illinois Emergency Management Agency, Department of Natural Resources and State Police are a few state agencies on the scene.
The Red Cross Little Egypt Network of Murphysboro is coordinating recovery efforts, and is currently accepting monetary donations. Donations can be sent to the agency at 665 N. Airport Road, Murphysboro, IL 62966. The Red Cross can also be reached by phone at (618) 529-1698.
