Illinois senators did not get enough support to change one of the governor’s money-saving plans. The governor vetoed $800,000 from the budget, because he wanted to consolidate animal disease control laboratory functions at one facility in Galesburg, closing the state’s only other such lab, in Centralia.
State Sen. Kyle McCarter (R-Lebanon) argued for an override on economic grounds: “The reason this is critical is because it sits in the middle of a rural area where it has the largest pork producers in all of the state,” he said.
