Some of the costliest winter home repairs involve frozen and broken pipes. While it may not get cold enough to freeze your water pipes this week, there are still several months ahead where the potential for cold exists, so the management at Illinois American Water has some tips to keep your pipes open and unfrozen.
Water company spokesman Karen Cotton says one of the most effective is to do something with the un-insulated pipes in your home.
She says you should make sure everyone in the house knows where the main water shut-off valve is and how to turn it off and on. And you should make certain the water to your hose bibs is shut off inside your house and that the lines are disconnected and drained.
