While temperatures haven’t fallen back to the freezing point yet, Illinois American Water Company wants to make sure you’re home is ready for when it does. Company spokesperson Karen Cotton says one of the biggest and costliest challenges for homeowners is dealing with frozen pipes during the late fall and winter seasons.

She says preventative maintenance starts by taking a look around your home.

Cotton says you should consult your local hardware store when buying insulation material to avoid any potential fire hazards. She also recommends sealing cracks and holes in outside walls and foundations, like where cable TV or phone lines enter the house.
