A Downtown Alton hotel continues to inch closer to reality, with the city council ready to formally request letters of interest at its next meeting. The city demolished the former Great Central Lumber Company complex about a year ago. Alton purchased the property along with an adjoining lot owned by Cornerstone Bank in 2011.
Alton's Director of Development and Housing, Phil Roggio, says there has been an uptick in interest in the project recently.
He says it has been a lengthy process to get to this point, as discussions have been ongoing with several entities over the past 9 to 12 months. Roggio stresses this is just another step in what could be a $25-million project for whatever developer winds up with the site.
