The former operator of the Discount House in Jerseyville is heading to prison for a year, bookended by home detention terms of six months each. John L. “Jay” Jones II of Jerseyville could have gotten more time for selling 51 guns to a man with whom he snorted cocaine, but a judge says he took into consideration his family situation in sentencing the 33-year-old on Friday.
Jones has a wife and two children, plus one on the way, so U.S. District Judge David Herndon sentenced Jones to six months of home detention, a year of prison time, another six months of home detention and two years of parole. He could have been sentenced to between 24 and 30 months, according to federal guidelines. Jones admitted in March to a single count of selling firearms to someone he knew to be a regular user of cocaine.
