If you need to get rid of your old prescription medicines, the Drug Enforcement Administration's second National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is coming up this Saturday. Locally, you can access the drop site at the Alton Police Department, or search for one at the agency's website. More than 5,000 sites nationwide have joined the effort.

Several different agencies will be working together to collect expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs that are potentially dangerous if left in the family's medicine cabinet. Karen Cotton, with Illinois American Water, says it's better to turn in your medications than it is to flush them.

Cotton comments

She says they try and keep the process simple to encourage participation. Last October, the effort resulted in over 188 tons of prescription drugs being dropped off nationwide. In Alton, you can always drop your medications in the box at the police station on Broadway.
