Alton Police talked a woman out of jumping off the Clark Bridge on Wednesday.  Southbound traffic was stopped for about 30 minutes after the woman climbed over the railing.  A number of calls came into the Alton Police Department, with several officers responding, along with the Alton Fire Department Marine 1 on the river below.

The incident began around Noon and by 12:30pm, the woman was talked back over the railing to safety.  Alton Police Chief Jason Simmons didn't identify the person, other than to say she is a 35-year-old white female.

Simmons says the woman was despondent over allegedly not being admitted to a local hospital to visit a relative.  He says when people threaten to jump, it is not uncommon to stop traffic on the bridge for the safety of all involved.  The Missouri Highway Patrol and St. Charles County Sheriff's Department also responded to assist with traffic control.
