Several Riverbend townships are now a part of the new America's Central Port District, but at least one wants out. Quarry Township, which encompasses Grafton and a large portion of the Great River Road, has asked to be removed from the district. It was originally included when the bill to expand the district was passed last year.
Bob Smith, Quarry Township Supervisor, tells The Big Z they were never informed they were being included in the bill, and did not like some of the language in the bill.

The executive director of the port district has said in previous interviews with The Big Z the district has never levied taxes, and does not anticipate that changing. Smith is hopeful the process will move quickly now that the Illinois General Assembly is in session. He says during a recent visit to State Senator Sam McCann’s office, they were in the process of drawing up the legislation to amend the bill.
