What would be the advantages to joining an expanded Tri City Regional Port District? That is a question the Godfrey Township Board hope to have answered at its February meeting. The district is looking at expansion, so it is trying to gather as much support from local township governments before lawmakers return to Springfield for the spring session.
Godfrey Township Supervisor Doug Mueller says the communities that are part of the existing district have seen job creation, pointing to the warehouse district along Interstate 270.

Other area townships are also being asked to join in support of the plan. The Port is a special-purpose unit of local government whose general mission is economic development in southwestern Illinois. It has many of the same powers as any municipality in the State, including the right to issue bonds and the power to levy a tax.
