A Pontoon Beach man has been sentenced to three years in prison for drug charges. The Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois James L. Porter announced late last week that 35-year-old Michael J. Murphy of Pontoon Beach was sentenced to 36 months in federal prison for Distribution of Methamphetamine in Granite City in December of 2013.
Murphy pled guilty to the charge on October 16th of last year and has been in federal custody since the time of his plea. According to the evidence Murphy sold around two ounces of meth to a police informant for $3,800 on December 11, 2013 near a bar in Granite City. Also charged along with Murphy was co-defendant Shawn A. Thompson who allegedly supplied the meth to Murphy. Thompson also pled guilty and is scheduled to be sentenced in U.S. District Court in East St. Louis on March 17th. The investigation was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Robert L. Garrison.
