Police agencies across the nation stress that the communities they protect have to be their eyes and ears when they are not around, but many fight a "no snitching" mindset that has been embedded in certain neighborhoods for years.  There has been some progress in eroding that stance in recent years, but one of the biggest steps might be tied to the anonymity provided by cyberspace.

Some witnesses may feel intimidated by the ones they are turning in.  In that case, Alton Police Public Information Officer Emily Hejna tells The Big Z they are conducting more business on social media these days:
