Illinois State Police now say the story of a man who said he was attacked while he helped change a tire was made up. Authorities could seek charges against the man who claimed that while he pulled over to help a stranded motorist Wednesday night on Route 140 outside Bethalto; two other men pulled up and began to attack him. Police say the man apparently told the false story to cover up an altercation he had with an acquaintance.
Originally, the man told police he pulled over to help an older woman change a tire. He said as he worked on the tire, two other men pulled up behind him and tried to stab him. The men also tried to get into the man's car, but it was locked. The woman who supposedly had the flat tire then drove off in her car and the two suspects also fled the scene in their vehicle. The man then drove himself to an Alton hospital where employees there notified police. Police have turned over the case to the Madison County State’s Attorney who could file charges for making false statements to police.
