The Alton Police Department is hoping to raise enough money to purchase a new dog for its K9 Division. The money to purchase one out of the city budget is not there, so Detective Marcos Pulido is organizing a fundraising drive to help offset the $15,000 or so it will cost to get the dog. They hope to have the dog by December 1.
That is when the department would have to submit the registration for the next training session in February. Alton had three dogs at this time last year. One has since retired, and another had to be euthanised. Alton Police Public Information Officer Emily Hejna says the dogs help them in several areas.
To get the ball rolling, Alton Mayor Brant Walker said he would match the first $500 in donations, which has already come in. For every $1,000 donation, you can submit a suggestion to name the dog. If more than $15,000 is raised, that money would be put back into the program to purchase more equipment. If you would like to donate to the cause, send it to:
