St. Louis area law enforcement leaders are preparing for a weekend filled with protests. Organizers have promised to protest in downtown St. Louis and police are planning additional resources due to the St. Louis Cardinal playoff games on Saturday and Sunday, a Blues game on Saturday, as well as the Rams Monday Night Football game.
There is heightened tension in the city following the shooting death of a teen at the hands of an off-duty police officer in south St. Louis on Wednesday. Police say the teen was armed and fired three shots at the officer before the officer returned fire and killed Vonderitt Myers Junior. The young man’s family claims he was unarmed. A prayer vigil near the shooting turned violent last night when protestors briefly clashed with police with a brick and a knife thrown at the officers. Someone else burned an American flag near the scene. St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson announced on Thursday that he is requiring two officers answer every call, including parking violations. St. Louis County officers and Missouri Highway Patrol troopers are also on 12-hour shifts. Ferguson has all of its officers working through Monday.
