Caseyville's former police chief is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. 56 year old J. D. Roth had resigned his post on June 1, but had been on suspension after recently being charged with fraudulently using taxpayer money for personal use. He was found in the backyard of his home on Thursday morning.
Roth had been charged with two counts of official misconduct in May for allegedly using a truck seized in a drug raid for both personal and police business. The truck was reportedly in the driveway of his home at the time of his death. The misconduct case was being investigated by the FBI, Illinois State Police, the St. Clair County State's Attorney, and the U.S. Attorney's Office for Southern Illinois.
