If you let your guard down during the hectic holiday season you can easily fall prey to thieves poised to pounce on careless or overburdened shoppers.  Even if you aren’t shopping, a recent car theft in Alton points out the need to be vigilant in taking precautions according to the Alton Police Chief.  Chief Jason Simmons says a woman on Berkley Avenue started her car to warm it up Friday morning when a man walking by jumped in and drove off.

After a brief chase the car had a flat tire on East Broadway.   While the car was recovered, the thief fled and is still at large.

If you are shopping, Simmons suggests staying aware of your surroundings, leaving extra cash at home, and getting in your car and leaving quickly once the shopping trip is done. Keeping valuables out of plain sight is another good idea.
