Sixteen cows were killed when a semi tipped over on Interstate 80 earlier this year and now an animal rights group wants that portion of the highway to become a memorial. The "Chicago Tribune" the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants the Illinois Department of Transportation to put up a roadside sign as a, quote, "tribute to the victims."

If IDOT agrees with the plan it will be the first official highway memorial in the nation dedicated to animals killed in traffic. Applications submitted in Virginia to honor about 200 pigs killed in traffic have been turned down in recent years. An IDOT spokesperson tells the "Chicago Tribune" the PETA application will likely be denied.
