Ameren customers will be dishing out a little more cash if they refuse to upgrade to advanced meters. The Illinois Commerce Commission has given Ameren the green light to charge people 20-bucks if they don't comply with the upgrades. Company officials say they'll make several attempts to contact the customer before assessing the fee.
There will also be a $70 one-time exchange fee per meter if an advanced meter is installed on your property and then you request it to be removed. ICC Spokesman Beth Bosch says the new meters are being installed now and the process will continue through 2019.

The reason behind the fee is because it will be an added cost to have to send someone out to read your meter. Anyone who'd like to avoid the charge can call the company to schedule a meter exchange at no cost. A similar charge has been approved for ComEd customers in northern Illinois.
