Friends, family, and even strangers are mourning the death of the woman that helped bring history to life in Alton. Charlene Gill co-founded the Alton Museum of History and Art, now located in Upper Alton. She died Friday at the age of 89.
Dr. Norman Showers is President of the Museum. He says Gill had a deep love for her work.

Showers says the museum will continue in her absence. Memorial donations in her name may be made to the museum. Other accomplishments listed by her family as include being named Grand Marshal of the Alton Memorial Day Parade, the oldest Memorial Day parade in the United States, the YWCA’s Woman of Distinction Award, 100 Women of Substance, the Studs Terkel Humanities Award and the National Society of the DAR’s Historic Preservation Medal.
