The man who was struck and killed on Interstate 270 in Glen Carbon Friday morning has been identified. The Madison County Coroner reports that 41-year old, Neal Zimmerman of the 700 block of Springfield Road in Gillespie died at the scene at 7:18 a.m. as a result of blunt force trauma sustained when he was struck by an eastbound Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck.
Police say that Zimmerman rear-ended a Mack truck near the Illinois Route 157 exit and both vehicles pulled over - the Mack truck to the right shoulder and Zimmerman to the left shoulder. Zimmerman then exited his vehicle and was struck by a truck driven by Keith R. Wall of Granite City as he tried to cross several lanes of traffic to check on the driver of the other vehicle.
No criminal charges will be filed in the case. Funeral arrangements for Zimmerman are under the direction of Kravanya Funeral Home in Gillespie. His visitation will be 11 a.m. until the the time of service at 1 p.m. today at the funeral home, with burial at Holy Cross Cemetery in Gillespie.
