There is $1-million in grant funding available for park & trail projects in Madison & St. Clair Counties. The Metro East Park and Recreation District has announced the Park and Trail Grant Matching Program will be looking at park, greenway and trail projects throughout the two counties that apply for the grants. Last year, the program gave out about $800,000.
A few examples include the Fred Winters Passive Park in Maryville, with a trailhead for the MCT Schoolhouse Trail with parking, restrooms and two gazebo picnic areas; a new boundless playground in Edwardsville Township Park that will be designed, constructed and built so children and families with and without disabilities can play together in an 80 percent accessible area; and $300,000 to construct a trail through Southwestern Illinois College's campus and to the MetroLink Station, which includes the development of a safe bridge crossing over South Green Mount Road.
That's district planner Bryan Werner. He says the applicatrion window for this year just opened, so they are looking forward to seeing what projects are submitted by the September 30 cut-off date. Grant decisions will be made by the end of December.
