Illinois officials are looking into taxing cans of paint bought at the local home improvement store. State lawmakers are supposed to argue the planned legislation sometime next month. The tax would pay for the state's paint-recycling program.
While there's no word on the amount of the proposed tax, states which do tax paint cans have set their levies at around 75-cents per can. Those states also have a central drop off point for old paint. There's no word on if this proposed legislation would provide that service. There is already a so-called recycling fee placed on old tires and car batteries and this would be a similar program.
