Drug overdose deaths are on the rise in Madison County according to the end of year statistics released Friday by the Madison County Coroner’s Office. Madison County Coroner Stephen Nonn tells the Big Z there were 101 overdose deaths in 2014 in Madison County, up from 54 in 2013.

75 cases were confirmed as drug overdoses while 22 deaths were attributed to heroin overdoses. Nonn says one of the keys moving forward is education our children about the dangers of drug abuse.

Nonn says there are still 22 suspected cases of prescription drug overdose and 4 cases involving suspected heroin overdose waiting on toxicology tests. He adds that the rise in prescription drug overdose deaths is part of a troubling national trend that prompted the CDC to recently declare prescription drug abuse an epidemic in the United States.
