One Carlinville man was arrested last night and another may be, following a hospital stay after allegedly breaking into a home and attacking another man and his girlfriend in an attempted armed robbery. In custody and awaiting charges is 37-year-old Robert G. Charles. 42-year-old Paul J. Charles is his alleged accomplice. Police say the pair broke into a home on Hoehn Street just before 7pm and pistol whipped a 19-year-old female and her 23-year-old boyfriend.
The boyfriend was the intended target of the two, but the boyfriend chased the suspects out of the house with a baseball bat. Police say Paul Charles and the 23-year-old victim were found behind a building in the 300 block of Mayo Street, where a fight had occurred between the two. Officers recovered a loaded 12-gauge shotgun at the scene. Robert Charles was arrested a short time later at a house in the 400 block of Sumner Street after a brief standoff. A handgun believed to be the second gun used in the robbery attempt was recovered. Assisting in the capture of the two were the Macoupin County Sheriff's Department, Illinois State Police, and the Girard Police K-9 Unit. The case remains under investigation by the Carlinville Police Department and the Central Illinois Drug Task Force.
