There will be no East Alton - Wood River Oilerettes performances during the fall sports season. The dance squad was told last spring by the school board that finances were tight and they would have to raise the money to pay for their coach's salary. That effort fell just short, so now the focus is on getting the funds together for the winter sports season.
And that is when the majority of the competitions for the dance team are held, according to Superintendent John Pearson. The goal is to raise about $4,000 for the stipend, and as of last week's board meeting, the effort fell a little less than $400 shy of the target. Pearson says another sport - bowling - was given a similar task of raising money to pay a coach. That is a winter sport, so there is still some time to meet that number, which is also about $4,000.
