Clean-up crews are working to contain an oil spill near Highland. The spill was discovered sometime between 7 and 8am Friday at a pumping station near Baumann and Pocahontas roads, near the Bond-Madison county line. It is believed about 4,200 gallons crude oil were spilled. The pumping station is owned by Plains All American Pipeline L.P. of Houston, Texas, and is part of the Capwood pipeline.
That connects an oil storage facility near Patoka with the refinery in Wood River. Some of the oil was running down ditches that feed Highland's Silver Lake, which provides drinking water for that town and several other nearby communities. It is not believed the oil has made it into the main part of the lake, south of I-70, but officials continue to monitor the situation. The spill is being investigated by the Emergency Management Agencies from both Madison County and Illinois as well as the EPA.
